This week’s iFriday theme was “influence.” First I was going to draw some pill bottles, thinking of all the annoying side effects of the meds I am on, but that was too depressing.

This is my uncle Larry (1955-2009). I didn’t know him until the past decade because he lived in Iowa, but I always saw photos on my grandparents’ wall of him when he was touring with his band. He looked like a cool guy. I also always heard about my other uncle, Dave (1952-1986), playing in bands and this could be part of the reason I thought I really needed a guitar when I was 10 or 11 years old.

I ended up getting to know Larry in the early ’00s, when he came back to PA and married my friend’s mother! They helped us move and we had good times.

My cousin’s dog, Erin. She always has this intense look on her face. The colors seem to have suffered a bit when I scanned it. Oil on board. I wanted to get some more texture so I used a toothbrush and thinned paint to do the bricks in the background, which is a lot of fun. I wanted a more blurry effect on the leaves, but I like it well enough as it is (though the colors are a lot nicer in real life).

Irises. My grandma used to grow them and my mom used to grow them, too. I liked helping my mom pick out pretty colors as a kid, but I know nothing at all about growing flowers. I can hardly identify most types of flowers, but I thought an iris would be a challenge because of the shape.

Mostly acrylic paint, but then I went in with some colored pencils, especially for shading the petals. I’d be lying if I said I’m thrilled with the outcome, but I wanted to force myself to get the iFriday thing done before the weekend, unlike most weeks when I don’t even submit because I wait too long. I’m at least happy I made myself finish it, rather than giving up halfway through.

Also, those dots on the petals are some sort of filth on my scanner. I need to do something about that.

for Illustration Friday: “Gesture”
I was reading about Nikola Tesla and some dying pigeon coming in his window or something, and he took it be greatly meaningful. Done very quickly with French Ultramarine Blue and white oils on illustration board. The gesture is the pigeon coming in and being seen as some kind of messenger or an omen, which apparently made Tesla more committed to his life’s work.

The scanner sort of murdered this, though it isn’t done yet anyway. I need to work more on her hair, add her necklace, blend some more. Oil on canvas, 8×10 I think.
